Rubbish Receptacles In Hastings REGULATION NEEDS Coneern was expressed this morning by the . Mayor of Hastings, Mr. G. A, Maddison, at the failure of a substantial pqrtion of the town's heuseholders to comply with the borough Bylaws regarding rubbish receptacles. It. has been ascertained that despite repeated appeals during the past few months for attentien to be given to this very important facfor in health control little regard has been given by a big beetion of tho com" munity. "I am pertuxbed at tho meagre respopse to the appeals of the couneil and the health officers to the house? holders to provide decent and proper rubbish Teceptaolea," said Mr. Maddi* gon.- ' ' Investigation discloses that not mere than half the people have ro? ceptaclea that eonform with the borough by-laws and the requirements of the health regulations." He emphasised the necessity for having receptacles that were sound and had close-fitting lids, "In view of the alarming spread of the dreaded infantile paralysis epidemie in Hastings it Is absolutely nrgent and essential to the safety of the people that every mean§ sheuld be taken tq keep the town in a healthy cqndition," he said. Mr. Maddison appreeiated the fact thaf in eertain eases the purehase of a regulation reeeptacle might be a hardtehip, but. he thought' it far better for some sacrifice. to be made in this regard than that neglect should ba the cause of prqbable illness or, even death, of a single ehild or person, "This hot weather is aecentuating the breeding of flies, and othep vermin" he added, 1 1 so people shonld reali'se how essential it is that every precaution should be taken to ensure that we have a healthy town and community. After all, flies are recognised as one of the greatest carriers .of disease and every' person should do all he can to keep the menace in cheek," The fact that determined steps wero being taken by the Auckland City Couneil was mentioned by Mr. Maddison, who said that there a house-to-house inspeetion was being made as part of the general elean-up.and every? body was being eompelled to comply with the city by-laws in the matter of rubbish receptacles.
