EXCHANGE OF TREES
Napier and _ Oversea Countries CENTENARY SCHEME A echeme for an exchange of trees from Napier with all parts of the world so Ihat, in the course of time, various streets and reserves in the borough would bo devoted to the trees of a nation overseas was put before the Napier Rotary Club yesterday by one of its membors, the Mayor of. Napier, Mr C. O. Mnr&e. His suggestion received favcurablo support from those present, and arrajigements will shortly be made to have the ncce&sary contacts with oversca.s Rotary clubs made so that the trees may be planted as part of the Dominiou"'s ccDtennial celebrations in 1940. "The thought has occurred to me," said Mr Moise, "that we may be able and we shoatd endeavour to plant more trees in and axound our town, and in a discussion wilh the manager of the Japanese atiiletic team which recently visited Napier the suggestion was made that Japan phould repeat to Napier her gift to the United States of Ameriea some years ago, The idea was readily accepted, aud no doubt it will bear fruit. "A snggesticn was then made that nations nhould exchange trees. I think that the Rotary Club can help in the idea of exehanges of trees between Napier and oversea countries so that we shall have trees to plant in the town in eelebration of the centennial. If this is done it may be the means of cementing the good relationships that should exist between nations."
The president of the club, Mr H. R. J. Dockery, said that the club would have no hesitation in accepting the suggestion. The object of proraoting good-fellowship was a Rotary ideal as well as a community ideal, and he protaised that the matter would be carried out ah soon as possible. Mention of the acorns from the Eoyal oaks iri the park at Windsor was made by Rotarian J. H. Edmundson, who is president of the Automobile Assoeiation (Hawke's ' Bay). The oak would in due course be planted in Napier by the assoeiation, he said. He suggested that expert adviee should he obtaiued before foreign trees which might not be suited to Napier 's climatie conditions were obtained.
