MELBOURNE'S PROGRESS
Building Apace; Flats in Favour
"NO SIGN OF DEPRESSION"
"There seema to be no eign Of any depression in Melbourne; the port is extremely busy and everyone appears to think that . the present prices for wool will hold; in fact, the people of Melbourne seem to be most optimistic about the future." These are some of the impressions of Captain H. WhiteParsons, Napier harbourmaster, who has just returned from a three-weelcs holiday aeross the Tasman. He noticed that buildings of flats were much in prominence in Melbourne, where he stayed most of the iime. A large number of residences, particularly in St. Kilda road, were either being pnlled down and rebuilt into flats or wei'e being altered, he said. There were extensive building operations going on. in other parts of the city as well,
indicating to him that Melbourne wsb s steadily progressing centre. Tho 1 harbour was particularly bupyj and waterside workers were occasional* ly engaged day and night to cope with the large amount of cargo arriving St or leaving the port. The Coode canal, the entrance to Victoria Dook, which 30 years ago was only wide enough to admit one vessel, had undergone maay improvements in late years and was now wide enough to allow two or more vessels to pass. ''Near 'The Shrin.e, (a big war memorial in St. Kilda road), there is a coloured water fountain, which the authorities allow to play only at certihn specified times. It is a beautiful fountain, but not quite so large, I think, as our Tom Parker Fountain in Napier," he added. Captain White-Parsons noticed a large number of tourists on the Marama during both crossings of the Tasman, He boarded the vessel at Wellington and sailed for Bluff and the Milford Sounds before heading west for Melbourne. He paid a tribute to ti® Marama, which he thought was as well-' found as any vessel ever engaged on the Tasman route. The attention given passengers and the table were edpial toi any he had ever seen.
