i CHRIST'CHURGH, Last. Night. The touring English cricket team played itself into a strong position on the second day of the match against the combined Oanterbury-Otago team at Lancaster Park and at stnmps had a lead of 310 xuns with two wickets to •fall. The home team failed againSt tha .visitors' iast attack. When the innings was resumed on a lively wicket the -score was taken from 70 for three wickets to 157. A iine innings by the young New Zealand representative Hadle'e saved the combined team from collapse. Hammond getting pace and turn from the wicket was the nlost impressive of the visitors' bowlers. Wyatt and Worthington in a solid opening paftnership passed the home team's total without being separated, bufc no other batsman made a prolonged stand and eight wickets fell with the addition of only 35 runs. Wyatt 's century was made nnder difficulties for a strained leg muscle hindered his runjning between the wickets. He batted for 188 minutes.
