Mishap to N.I. Main Trunk Express EXCURSIONISTS DELAYED
(By Telegraph-
AUCKLAND, Last night. Leaving the rails when about a mile north of Mercer the refrigerated car on the express train that left Auckland at 3 o'clock on Saturday afternoon for Wellington broke the coupling attaching it to the freight waggon in front and caused three Waggone to be abandoned on the track. As a result, the express was delayed for about half an hour and delays also occurred to other trains using the line, notably four excursion trains returning to Auckland from the Ngaruawahia regatta and the express from Taneatua. An examination of the car showed tbat the derailment had caused the axle-box of the leading bogey to snap. The car came to rest just off the rails at a slight angle. Neither it nor the waggon in front was damaged about the bodywork and all three waggons were jacked off the rails to let the other traffic through.
