PUKETAPU SPORTS
Annual Meeting Proves Popular Fixture LARGE CR0WD ATTENDS The popularity of tlie Puketapu Sports Club's ahnual sports meeting waS fully horne but by the very large crowd which gathered on the Sports ground on Saturday. The ground, kindly lent by Mr E. D„ Holt had, by the assiduous labours of a very numeroiis and hard-working sports committee, beexi transformed into an ideal sports ground, each poriion being set apart for sbtoe special SectiOn of the sports programme, and so iVell arranged that aluiost every section could be viewed without one's having to go far. The weather was ideal and it is doubtful if so many motor cars had ever previousiy been seen at the Puke> tapu sports. These came from all parts of the provihce, many people having travelled long distances to be present. ' The horse events brought ont large 'fields, includingj many of the best juinpers in the distriot, while the eourse for jumping was one of the best that could possibly have been provided. The axemen's events attracted large erowds round the ring each time a chop was taking place. The motor-car items proved equally attractive, aS did the national dancing items. An interested crowd of onlookers watched the sheepdog trials all day. The running, cycling and field events were among the strongest attractions, and these' were carried out under direction of the officials of the Napier Amateur Athletie and Cycling Club, who one' and all carried out their duties well. To the handicappers of the running, cycling, field and axemen's events a special word of praise is due for "the splendid contests which resulted from their work. One of the special features of tHe' success of a Puketapu sports meeting is the splendid co-ordination of the varfous officials in every section. Each lot of officials takes charg)© of a particular section, but a-U work together so smoothly, tbat a truly immense sports programme is carried out with the utmost smoothness. For this smooth working a great deal of credit is due to the sports marshall, Mr Phil. Drummond, a tireless worker, but to all of the small army of officials working under his banner very great credit is also due. A lot of work also fell to the secretary, Mr F. S. Byrne, and his assistant, Mr A. L. Waterhouse, and Mr Byrne is perhaps the only man in Hawke's Bay who has never seen a Puketapu sports meeting, for his duties on the day have always been of that arduous kind which lef(> no roomfor sight-seeing-Not less successful . than the sports was the grand sports ball in the evening. Here the crowd was inordinately large but, to judge by the happy faces of the dancers, not too larg© for enjoyment. Everything was of the best, music, floor and especially the supper gaining praise from dancers, particularly those present at the sports ball for the first time. So the Puketapu Sports Club is entitled to write the word "success" in capital letters against the sports and ball of 1937.
