(By
The Hastings Golf Olub opened the 1937 season to-day, Saturday,' with a mixed Ganadian foursome, choose own parlners. Members of other clubs were extended the usual cordial invitation to participate and with the weather fine a good outing was had. More summer play has been indulged in this year than is usual, made possible hy the excellenfc rains throughout the hot months preserving the growth on the fairways, but the past eix weeks dry weather has given the fairways a temporary setback that only a good downfall of rain can overcome. The gireenSj hdwever, are in excellent condition owing to the copious water supply and in addition the close attenrion that has been given them in the way of weeding, sowing seed, top-dressing and extending the outer margins. A big summer programme of work to the fair ways. bunkers and tees will also have a benebeial effect on the course generally. The practice putting green has been extended to double its former size and also a professional's shop and caddy's shelter has heen added to the buildings. A numher of resignations owing to removals has been more than counterbalanced by the number of new members joining up. A generous programme extending from March 20 to October 25, and providing matcbes every Thursday and Saturday on altogether 62 days, has been drawn up that will give members full opportunity to secure a trophy whether their speciality is medal, match or bogey play. In addition, eight inter-club fixtures are set down, commencing with the Napier club on May 2- The men's annual open tournament has been arranged for August 26, 27 and 28. The ladies' tournament is set down for September 21, 22 and 23, a week prior to th'e ladies' New Zealand championship to -be played on the Waiohiki links. Altogether, golfers will hav© a very busy season, but much depends on the individual players themselves to secure the harmony that will make' play both successful and enjoyable. They should make themselves fully conversant with the rules and carry out the etiquette of the game punctiliously. ■ ■ I .....
