ATTEMPTED BURGLARY

Intruders Disturbed at Waipukurau CAR'S QUICK GETAWAY An attempt was made to break into) Mr S. E. Salter's jewelleria shop ia Ruataniwha street, Waipukurau, in the early hours this morning. The in. truders were disturbed by tho night. watchman, Mr El Price, beforo they, could do more than damage the doorA however. At 2.20 this morning, Mr Price wa* outside tho Loan and Mercantile Agency .Co's building in Ruataniwha street when he noticed a car swing ronnd from Herbert street into Ruataniwha street and puil up. From where Mr Price stood the . car appeared to havei stopped outside tho Oceanio diningroom. There was nothing unusual about this, as late travellera frequently stop there for a meal. As Mr Price approached he realised that the car was standing outside Mr S. E. Salter's shop and not the din-ing-room, and that it still had the eagine running. Hurrying forward he heard someone call out, "Come on,"and a young man, about 6ft. lGin. in height ran out of the recess in which the door of the shop stands and jumped into the car which immediately staTted off, ewingjng round through Northumberland street, making baek towards Waipawa again. .Mr Price was unable to take the number as the rear number plate waa covered with sacking but the car ap*> peared to he a Buick or a Nash, with-. out any side curtains. Three small screws which held tha ornamental handle to the frame of th* glass door of the shop were removed, and the handlo badly bent in an e£» fort to screw the Yale lock round in its fitting. No other damage was done, however, thanks to the intruders be* ing disturbed so quickly. The police are investigating the mat* ter.
