THE AUTUMN SHOW

"The Penman")

High Quality Fruit And Poultry Seetions ORCHARDISTS PRAISED

5 (By

The fruit display at the Hawke's Bay autumn show was comparable with the best that have been seen at any autumn show of the society. In any year the show of fruit would be considered outstandingly good, but under the adverse cireumstances under which so many orchardists have had to contend with this season the display was really remarkable. Although many of the usual exhibitors were absent from the list this year, their place was taken by others and there was certainly no laflk of quality in the fruit on show. Colour in the apple section seGmed to be more pronounced than ever and the section was one which would have "been hard to equal. Pears -and peaehes were also good, while the grapes were the best lot seen here for some years. In this part of the Produce Hall, too, the Hawke 's Bay Fruitgrowera Association had a w-ell arranged and very attraetive exhibit: ''Fruit, the Gateway to Health." A quantity of fruit and i fruit products in the form of bottled and canned fruits, tomatoes, asparagus (canned for the first time by aiijy New Zealand faetory), wines and ciders, against a pretty seenic baekground, drew attention to the many forms in Which Hawke's Bay fruit is now being marketed. 4 The poultry section of the show was better than usual as far as quality is concerned, though the numbers were much the same as last year. m the bantam classes, Mr G. C. Thornton, of Clive, exhibited some golden and silver Sebright bantams, the prettiest of ail varieties ef bantams and the most diffleult to breed to anything like perfection. It was the first time any of these birds have been seen at this show. Orpingtons, both fancy and utility, Bhode Island Becls, Minorca pullets, Utility White Leghorns, Silver Wyandotte pullets, were all well above the average for quality. The ducks were a good lot.
