PATSY HENDREN
"PETER PAN" OF CRICKET CAREER ENDS IN GLORT PLAYED IN 1340 INNINGS Patsy Hendren, the Peter Fan of today's cricketers, has concluded Idst season in a blaze of glory. What is more, he has denied the report that he is taking up ibaseball this year, stating that he never had an intention of deserting the king of games. His career comprises 1340 innings, 162 not outs, 166 centuries, 46.20 average, 55,783 runs. Only one cricketer, J. B. Hobbs, has made runs and more centuries, his 61,221 for 50.63 being made is one less playing year. Only Rhodes and C. P. Mead have "Carried their bats" so often, with 237 and 185 uncompleted' innings respectively, the former, W. G. Grace and F. E. Woolley being the only three to have played more innings than Hendren. Hendren has made more consecutive 1000's per season than anyone, and is the only cricketer to have made 2500 and more in a season nine times, Hobbs, with seven times, being nearest to this. Walter Hammond and Bradman
cai;ci iiun as a aouDie eenturymaker, the former's total being 27 and Bradman's 28 to Hendren's 25. Sharing the distinction with four others, Hendren has made four twin centuries,- C. B. Fry with five and Hobbs with six- being the two to have made more. Moreover, he obtained one pair of his two separate hunareds in a match in his 48th. year, a quite unprecedented feat. No cricketer had more innings last season, and to have come through fourth in the averages and top of the aggregates, being 500 ahead in this column of any others, shows how fit Hendren must keep. With Sutcliffe he is the only cricketer who has compiled 3000-odd In a , season three times, or has made 13 centuries and more twice. Unique records to his credit are 1000 a month on three occasions, once in June (1925) and twice in August (1933 and 1936), and the only Englishman's 1000 runs in Australia in as many as three occasions. Forty-eight this month, his 25th. season, he can scarcely oe expected to eventually surpass Hobbs' total in centuries, but no doubt he will finish by exceeding his recora aggregate. His aggregate in two seasons against Surrey has exceeded 800 runs,- '
