WOMEN'S EXHIBITS AT THE H.B. AUTUMN SHOW
Women 's exhibits attracted the interest of a very large number of patrons at the Hawke's Bay A. and P. Society 's autumn show and a very high standard was maintained throughout. A particularly tempting array of preserves of every description was judged by Mrs. Ernest Groome, Te Onepu, and the bottled fruits and vegetables, pickles, sauces, chutneys, jarns and jellies were the subject of many very complimentary remarks from the onlookers. One competitor who deserves very special cnention is Mrs. L. W. Goldfinch, who had no less than 23 entries in these classes as well as 20 entries in the cooking classes, and who was successful in winning a large number of firsts. Mrs. M. E. Keith, Hastings, judged the cooking section, and her task.must also have been difficult as there were a spelendid number of entries — delicious looking cakes of many kinds, shortbread, biscuits and many small cakes besides the bread and scones. The novice section in the cooking and also in the preserve classes showed some excellent entries. The baskets of New Zealand-grown fruit arranged for effect were beautif'ully carried out. The winner, Mrs. J. Barden, had a splendidly arranged exhibit with a fine cooabination of fruit and colours. The other exhibits in this class were all well arranged. Mrs. E. Appleby was awarded Urst prize for her basket of cut flowers carried out in flame shades with dahlias. cannas, pom pom dahlias, gladioli, antirrhinuin,s, rosebnds and maidenhaxr fern. . For the bowl of cut flowers Mr. L. Hicks gained first place with an eff-eetive exhibit in deep red shaded dahlias interaiingled with the same flowers in pale lemon and ferns. Once again the work from the Women 's Instifute showed that their members are always busy. In the thrift article class Mrs. C. W. Turner, Kairanga Women ?s Institute, was awarded first place from 19 entries. Her exhibit was a traycloth oiade from Reckitt 's blue-bags beautifully embroidered with drawn-thread work. A beautiful brown, pink and green wool rug exhibited by Mrs. E. Donovan won second prize, and a mop, shown by Miss D. Anderson, Twyford Women 's Institute, was placed third. Mrs. W. R. Mitchell, Pakowhai Women 's Institute, won first place for her collection of stuffed toys, while Mrs. A. Fourneau, from the same institute, gained first place for her seagrass stool. Mrs. A. J.
