Manchester Unity Conference at Waipukurau MOTIONS DEALT WITH The following notices of motions were dealt with at the 59th annual conference of the H.B. Disti'ict, Manchester TJnity of Oddfellows held at Waipukurau during the week: — Bro. F. W. Franklin, P.G. (Hastings) prOposed that Juvenile Eitual as published by Manchester Hnity headquarters be adopted as the Standard ^Eitual for juvenile lodges in this district. Bro. L. Prince (Kapier) seconded the motion. Bro. P. J. S. George, P.D.G.M. (Hastings), spoke in support. Bro. H. S. M. Quigley, P.G.M., nrged caution ais to making a decision on the question at issue at this stage. He suggested that a conference be held on the subject. Similar views were expressed by Bro. E. D. Mackie, I.P.D.G.M. He moved as an amendment that a meeting of juvenile lodge seeretaries and superintendeiitis be held for the purpose of considering the matter of Hawke's Bay Uniformity. The amendment became the motiOn and as a further amendment Bro. C. H. Brown, P.D.G.M., moved, and Bro. Holms, P.D.G.M., seconded, that the matter be referred to the Board ot Directors with a view to securing Kew Zealand uniformity. — Carried. "That instructions be issued covering points not defined in the explanatory memoranda issued with the new Eitual," was a proposal from Loyal Hastings Lodge, proposed by Bro.
Stoekholm. It was decided, on the tnotiott of Bro. Prince, that the question be referred to the Grand SfeCretary through the District Management Comniittee for their interpretation, and lodges be invited to forward poiiits on which Jnformatien is desired. The date Axed by whieh lodged forward requests was flxed as Aptil 30. Bro. P. J. B. George, P.D.G.M., moved: "That in view 6f the present intere'st fateS th&t the Conference di9a cuss the question of the rate of ifi' terest to be retained by the Sick and F]ineral Fund of. lodges. Bro. D. F. Stium, P.G., seconded the motion. The mcver gave nn outline of the position faeing the friendly societies in respect of the rate of interest fixed as the standard of limitatipn. He favoured a 4 per eent. baslo rate. Bro. Laws, P.G., exjiressed Ihe opinion that the falling rate of interest had no real bearing on the position. The move toward a reduetion in the basic rate was defeated by 18-votes to 35. , Bro. D. F. Sturm, P.G. (Hastings) moved a rfiniit as to the principal of* the District Bcnevolent Fund being repaid ic the lodges concerned, in pfOporfcion to (!'>ii original contributions thereto. Ho expressed the view that these bene'inent sums should be paid back to the lodges instead of remaining undistribftttd as one big total in the hands of the District Management Committee. The District Secretary .((Bro. J'., P. Willianison, P.D1G.B.) gave informatlon in regard to the attitude of the Begistrar of Friendly Societies in respect to an earlier proposed rule as to ditttribution to the contributory lodges. On a division the motion was. defeated by 29 votes to 9.
