Norsewood R.S.A. Provide Enjoyable Outing

NORSEWOOD Last night. Held amid beautiful and ideal surroundings, and in very . favourable weather, the Norsewood Returned Soldiers' Association's picnic and sports was most enjoyable and from every viewpoint a splendid success. The children had a royal timo and were liberally catered for, as, apart from the big programme of athletic events, eachi cbild received a gift. Mr F. Bishop, president, and Mr W. Te Tau, secretary, assisted by their energetic committee, had a busy time and kept the events going with a stfing. A booth, well stocked with sweets, soft drinks and ice-creams, was well patronised and those in charge had a very busy time supplying the needs of their numerous customers. Shortly after everyone had partaken of their lunch, the programme was got under way, and th© results of the events are as follow: Tiny tots' race: Gils, A. McLean 1, G. Gleeson 2 ; boys, B. Berkahn 1, R. Forbes 2. Girls, age 7 years : D. Smith 1, Betty Madson 2j boys, H. Allardice 1, O. Haye 2. Girls, under 10 years: Gladys Smith 1, Peggy Madson 2 j boys, L Magnussen 1, J. Allardice 2. Girls, under 13 years: H. Walsh 1, Alwyn Adamson 2; boys. P.- Culliford 1, N. Nicholson 2. Sack race, .boys : R. Todd 1, N. Nicholson 2; girls, M. Logan 1, J. Rrenkley 2. Girls' race, under 16 years : S. Lee 1, M. Smith 2 ; boys, N. Barclay 1, M. Tarr 2. Three-legged race, boys: L. Bishop and N. Barclay, 1, G. Magnussen and N. Nicholson 2,; girls, H. Walsh and J. Stretton 1, M. Smith and M. Egan 2. A "Diggers" race for a challenge shield kindly made and donated by Mr Les Anderson, of Dannevirke, proved very exciting, and resulted in Messrs E. G. Stretton and D. Allardice breasting the rope together. The winners bold the shield for six months eacli. The high 'jump for boys (handicap), resulted in three tieing, and in the final N. Nicholson was first with L. Smith second. • A ladies' race (open) was also keenly contested and resulted in Mrs J. Todd winniug by about one yard with Miss J. Tait next. Men's rac? (open), was a good one, and W. Haycock come first with Mr Castles a close second. A bojrs' half-mile race reulted in E. Nicholson first with I. Nicholsen a close second. Tlie competition for a beautiful dinner service was finalised and the winner was Mr H. Booth, of Napier. Mr Stretton, principal of the school, took the opportunity to thank the R.S.A. for the splendid manuer -they had treated the children and provided for them and also the older people for such a nenjoyable outing. He called for cheers in appreciation, wEcli were heartiiy given. The Norsewood R.S.A. wish to tender their thanks and appreciation to Mrs Murray, Messrs P. M. Coady and P. Nelson for donations, and also the many willing helpers who so generously gave assistance which added considerably to the success of the outing.
