TWO CLIPPER SHIPS LAND
Survey Flight to Auckland Under Way DEFARTURE TO-DAY (By Telegraph— Press Assn.— Copyright. > (Eeceived 19, 12,20 p.m.) HONOLULU, March 18. The new Pan-American Airways clipper pioneering the route to New Zealand arrived. It will probably depart on Friday for Kingman Beef, Pago Pago, and Auckland. The Hawaii clipper arrived on its regular voyage to Manila. . Carrying a crew of five and piloted by Captain Edward Musick, the clipper left at 4.18 p.m., Pacific time, on its survey flight to New Zealand. The Manila clipper, with seven passengers
and a crew of eight, left at 3.6 p.m. A North American Newspaper Ailiance copyright message by Captain Musick states;— "An hour after the take-off we sighted a plane moving over a cloud fioor aft. It was that of Mrs. Putnam. As soon as she overtakes the Hawaii clipper it is arranged that we both advance our speed 10 knots above the arbitrary minimum set to assure her of a clear sky ahead on the long dash to Honolulu. "The weather is clearing to the westward with high cumulus clouds 12,000 feet overhead, with Tain squalls to the north and south. The sun is a great fiery ball ready to plunge into the clouds on tho horizon. Our navigation then shifts to the stars until dawn oif Hawaii at the end of the first 2400 miles of our flight ' down uuder ' "
The flying distance from San Francisco to New Zealand is 6980 miles. Distances of the various "hops" are: — San Pranciscq-Honolulu, 2410 miles Honolulu-Kingman Ueef, 1070 miles, Kingman Eeef-Pago Pago, 1550 miles. Pago Pago-Auckland, 1850 miles.
