BLENHEIM, Mareh 16. A confident hope that the South Is-j land Main Trunk would be eompleted] by 1940, coinciding with New Zealand's centenary, was expressed by the] Minister of Railways (the Hon. D. G.j Sullivan) at a complimentary dinnerl at Kaikoura last evening. Satisfaction with the future of thel lino for the purposes of commerce and] the development of the territory' through wihich it passed was referred; to by the Minister, who stressed the fact that the Public Works Department was looking well to tihe future of the line, in that the type of construction was designed to assist fast speeds. In an interview, the Minister mentioned that it was the first time he had seen any major railway construction work under the present regime, and #he confessed to a feeling of thrill and pride at seeing the pace at whicb modern machine methods were forgin" through the big undertaking. Tihe Minister eompleted his first tou' of inspection of the line with his ar rival at Blenheim this afternooi) accompanied by railway officials.
