OTAMAURI SPORTS

A Splendid Holiday Outing FINE HORSE EVENTS Staflon acfivity from Fernhill to Kuripapanga was fully suspended on Saturday when a holiday was taken for the outstanding event of the year, the Otamauri Sports Club(8 annual meeting at Whakamarumaru. The gathering, which was very largely attended by both country people and towns folk, was a most interesting attraction providing a most enjoj'able day's outing. Mr W. L. Nelson' s grounds at Whakamarumaru were ideal for the purpose. The trees and general lay-out of the grounds wero all that could be desired to enable the meeting to be held, under picnic conditions, For this purpose these grounds would be unsurpassable in Hawke's Bay. The gathering was an outstanding success, and the committee is to be highly complimented upon their organisation which enabled their programme to be got through without the slightest delay. Unfortunately rain fell for about an hour during the afternoon, but it in no way marred the sports which were carried on without interruption, the trees and the nuinerous cars parked around providing good shelter. Th© programme consisted largely of horse events which included a greater variety than is seen elsewhere at sports meetings in Hawke's Bay. Splendid entries were received, making a new record for the club. The performances of the horses and riders^ alike were of h high standard and the judge, Mr Oswald Nelson, of Mangateretere, had a difficult task in making his awards. Statioix life contrihuted largely to the excellent horsemanship displayed, the competitorg being much at home in the saddle. Among the novelty events the egg and plate race was a groat test in steadiness while galloping. Tlie mounted tug-of-war> an event seldom seen at other sports gatherings, was of special interest, and to ,maintain good positions under heavy pulling strains on unsaddled mounts was no easy task, Praise for the unqualified success ot the meeting is due to the president, Mr W. L. Nelson, the honorary secretary, Mr Harold F. Beamish and to the committee which consisted of Messrs T. Agnew, D. H. Beamish, G. H. Treseder, A. W. Butt, W. J. Dysart, A. W. Whyte, O. Bridgman, A. M. Hyslop and W. A. Lowe. Picnicing arrangements enabled iunches to he partaken of under most delightful conditions. Splendid catering was carried out by Mr J. Scarrott, of Bay View. At tbe conclusion of the events the special awards, tropliies and prizes were presented to the success tui competitors by Mrs W. L. Nelson. Cheers were given for Mr Oswald Nelson, the judge, who carried out his duties in such an able manner, and also for the president and Mrs Nelson Results.— • HORSE EVENTS Girl or boy rider under ll. — Ralpli Beamish 1, Janet Dysart 2, June Wills 3.
