ATHLETIC RECORDS BROKEN Rona Tong's New Time for 880 Hurdles JAPANESE DO WELL
(By Telegraph-
AUCKLAND, Last Night, Five Dominion records were lowered in the New Zealand a.thletic championships at the Domain to-day. Rain overnight made the track slightly on the slow side, therefore the records are all t^ie more meritorious. A slight breeze from the south-west hindered the runners, especially in the 100 yards, which they had to face. The outstanding feature of the day was .the xecord established by Murakoaa, Japan, in a special atte51n.pt on the three. miles paced by Wilson (Wellington). For the first mile the pair made a big gap on the field. Wilson then retired and Murakosa running beautifuliy carried on and won by 180 yards from J. W. Savidan, the veteran Olympic games representative, who ran better over the final stages. The time, 14min. 11 3-fisec., beat that established by C. H. Matthews (Canterbury) in 1936. A. T, AnderBon (Canterbury), al-, though showing hesitation in taking several hurdles, broke the 440 yards New Zealand record by three-fifthe seconds. Togami, the Japanese jumper, won the, broad jump with 23ft. 10ins.| which is three-quartcrs less than J. Pe Metcalfe (Au3tralia) covered in 1934. As Togami was not eligxble the title went to J. Crowe (Wellington) with 22ft. lOins. In the hop, step and jump Togami won the event with 50 feet, which is one inch lesa than J. P. Metcalfe (Austrailia). The title was won by Brajnsby (Auckland) with 48ft. 8ins. Bowie (Auckland) broke the 220 yards hurdles record in 24 l-5sec. by 4-5 second. Two ladies' records were established. In the 80 yards hurdles Miss E. Tong (Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay) bettered tb existing record by 2-5see. In the 440 yards ladies' relay the Auckland team bettered the figures by 1 l:5sec. J Owing to the judges having to wait .for a photograph of the result of the second and third places in the 220 yards final, the points in the provincial uham.pionship were not decided. Otago, however, is assured of aggregate hononrs. 1937 Champions. The champions are: — 120 hurdles: P. T. Bowie (Auckland). 880 yards: T. Allen (Otag6). " 100 yardii : W. J.
