SIR GEORGE HARPER

OHRISTUJ±U±tUJ±, Jjast jNignt. ^ The death oceurred to-night of Sir George Harper, who was knighted in the last New Year honours in February. Sir George Harper, O.B.E., who was 94 years of age, was a son of the late Bishop H. J. C. Harper, Primate of New Zealand and first Bishop of Christchurch. For many years he had been one of the most notable men in public life in Christchurch, Until a few months ago he was chairman of the Christchurch Citizens' Relief Association. He was born in Berkshire and edueated at Eton College. He came to New Zealand in 1858 and in 1866 returned to London and studied for the Bar He had a distingulshed career in the legal profession in New Zealand. He was one of the founders of the Citizens' Defence Corps at the outbreak of the Great War and was instrumental in f orming a club for returned men, the elub afterward being merged in the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association. He had been a member of the governing body of Christ's College since 1900 and subwarden since 1920.
