White Settlements ln Central Africa Planned by British
DAE-Es-SAIAAM, Tanganyika — In the Southern Highlands of Tanganyika proparations are being made for the first settlers from Britain 'uuder a scheme for communal white settlements The scheme has been launched under the direction of Lord Chesham. It is based on the theory of mixed farming, under central marketing schemes. Advantages for this method from the settlers' point of view are, it is claimed, that the farmers will have the benefit of non-competitive salesmanship and the advantage of depending on a number of products rather than on one staple crop. The communal settlements .are to operate by the main Cape-to-Cairo road. The holdings have the advantage ' of completed roads. Main hopes are centered in cattle. These are hoightened at the moment through the fact that in the "Highlands there is a shortage of stock at present. ,It is claimed that there is an assured internal market for dairy produce. Wheat is to be the main cereal crop, with maize as a subsidiary. The two boxing managexs were discussing the forthcoming fight. ; "At the end of theN second round," said one, "your man will hit mine and he will go down for the count." "No, no," expostulated the other "Not iu the secoud round; in the Beventh or eighth. We mustn't choat the publicl " A party of sailors were being shown over the cathedral by a guide. "Behind the altar," he told thea, "lies Eichaxd the Second. In the ehurchyard outside lies Mary Queen of Scots; also Henry . the Eighth. And Who," he demanded, halting above an unmarked flagstone, "who do you think is a-lying 'er e?" "Well," answered one man, "I don't know for sure, but I have my suspicious."
