CROQUET

Watkins Challenge Shield Two teams from the Port Ahuriri Croquet Club travelled to Havelock North to play for the Watkins Challenge Shield yesterday. The Havelock greens were swift and in excellent playing condition. Play was on handicap and some very good croquet was witnessed, the honours in three out of four games going to the holders, thus securing for them the continued possession of the shield. Scores were as follow; — A grade. — Mesdames Hennan and Wilson (10i) beat Mesdames Logan and Courtney (6), 26 — 10, 14—26. B grade. — Mesdames Meacfs and Ferguson (14) beat Mesdames Lockwood and Clegg (124), 26—7, 26—21. The Havelock members entertained the visitors to lunch and afternoon tea, and at the close of play the president of the Port club, Mrs Logan, congratulated the havelock teams on their eonsistent play and thanked them for their cordial hospitality. TTnder the conditions governing this competition, challonges are sustained in their eorrect order each seven days, and play ceases each year on March 31. Thus only two more series of matelies can be played before the competition closes for 1937. These will be played by the Omarunui and Napier clubs respeetively. All other challenges will be held over until next season.
