UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY
Payment During Temporary Absence An interesting point iu connection with the Employment Aet was mentionod to |a Heraljd-Tribune reportei to-day by a resident who recently returned to Now Zealand after an absence of two years in Great Britain. On his return to New Zealand the. traveller xegistered as xequired by the Act, but great was his surprise when the clerk informed him that he would have to pay the, two years' levies, amounting to £2, for the period during which he was away. In justifying this charge, the officer pointed out that the Act stated that the levy must be paid "for periods of temporary absence," and also informed the traveller that he might be prosecuted for failing to pay his levies on the due date, even though he was not resident in the. Dominion at the time. Under protest the retuxned taxpayer paid up. The Act does not give any cloar dofinitlon of tlie word "temporary," i! was pointed out, and even an absence of 30 years from tbe Dominion would mean that "the instalments of levy amounting to £20 would have to be paid on return.
