Open Event in Polo Tourney PLAY NEARING END Sole leadership was obtained by Hawke's Bay in the senior open event yesterday when the fourth day's play in the Hawke's Bay Polo Club's annual yankee tournament was somewhat marred by unfavourable weather. Rain fell during the progress of the morning and early afternoon games, making conditions unsatisfactory, the ground being slippery. Despite this, however, the standard of play was excellent, competition being exceptionally keen, for the games were vital ones as far as the competitions were conceined. The main game of the afternoon was the meeting of Hawke's Bay- and Rangitikei A, and this was a sterling eontest throughout. The home side collected the honours in the open, but the handicap honoura went to the visitors. Another very exciting match was the senior fixture between East Coast and Wallingford, the former creating a big. surprise to beat Wallingford in both the open and handicap events. A score right on the call of time gave the East Coasters a 4 — 3 victory in the open. Hawke 's Bay are now leading the open senior event with four wins and no losses, and in the handicap event Rangitikei and Masterton are dual leaders with three wins and a loss each. In the junior division, Atua have not suffered a defeat in their four games, and Haumoana have suffered one defeat only in their five games in the open event.. The junior, handicap event is led by Atua with four wins The results of yesterday 's games are as follow: — SENIOR GRADE ! Handicap Event Rangitikei A (6) beat Hawke's II y (scr), 8 — 4. Masterton (14) beat Waipawa (14), 20—17. East Coast (10) beat Wallingford (3) 14 — 6. Open Event Hawke's Bay beat Rangitikei A, 4—2. Masterton beat Waipawa, 6 — 3. East Coast beat Wallingford, 4 — 3. JUNIOR DIVISION Handicap Event Hastings (5) beat Haumoana (scr) 6—5. Rangitikei B (5)) beat Whareama (7), 12—9. Taihape (8) beat Waimarama (14) 16—14. Atua (7) beat Hastings (5), 16 — 13. Open Event Haumoana beat Hastings, 5 — 1. Rangitikei B beat Whareama, 7 — 2. Taihape beat Waimarama, 8 — 0. Atua beat Hastings, 9 — 8. Gymkhana To-morrow , The tournament play concludes this afternoon, but the polo week will not linish until to-morrow when there will be a grand gymkhana at the Hastings racecourse commencing at 10 o'elock in the morning. The gymkhana programme is as follows.:— 10 am. — Best team of three ponies with groom. Points to be awarded for general turnout. 2 p.m. — Polo ball raee (men). 2.15 p.m. — Polo ball race (ladies). 2.45 p.m. — Turning competition (men). 3 p.m. — Turning competition (ladies). 3.15 p m. — Thread-the-needle. 3.45 p.m. — Ladies' bracelet. 4 p.m. — H.B. Polo Cup. 4.15 p.m. — Nightgown race. Eide 50 yards bareback, dismount, light eignrette, saddle up and ride 50 yards, dismount, put on nightgown, gallop homv with cigarette alight and nightgown on properly.
