CORONATION DAY PLANS

■ % i> 1 Arrangements for Napier Discussed VISIT FROM LEITH Furtlier suggestionB for the celebration oi. Coronation Day in Napier were received at a meeting of the committee. Definite arrangements for the day's programme ar© at present hampered by the lack of knowledge of the .plans of the Government regarding the time for the reading of the proclamation and the Education Department regarding the part which the schools are to play, but the committee is fully to explore most of the suggestiona so that arrangements may speedily be made when the position is clarified. The warship, H.M.S. Leith, is to be at the Glasgow wharf during Coronar tion Week, aecording to advice received in Napier, and it is hoped to> be able to obtain a party from the ship to give a drill demonstration on the Marine Parade. Suggestions were put forward that the children from the combined schools should sing appropriate songs* such as "Land of Hope and Glory" and "God Defend New Zealand." Mr. G. B. Menzies, who took the chair in the absence of the Mayor, Mr C. O. Morse, said that in his opinkm, Napier had never introduced a true carnival spirit into celebrations of this sort. He suggested that the festivities would be greatly improved if carnival masks were issued free on the night of the Coronation, with the traditional unmasking at midnight. On the suggestion of Miss K. Matthews, it was decided to explore the possibilities of presenting a series of historical tableaux at the Sound Shell on the night. It was decided to approach Napier organisations and business liouses to see if this could be arranged. A further suggestion Was that the Hawke's Bay and Eost Ccnst Aero Club should be asked to give a display. A further meeting of the committee will be held next week, when it is hoped that definite news of the official arrangements for the celebration of Coronation Day will be avaikible, in order to permit the committee to make further arrangements to fit in with these.
