Heavy Seas Break Over SHip
(By Telefn'anh—
GISBORNE. This Day, The Marino is a vessel of ten tqns. Captain A. F. Johnson was in charge, and othei's on board were Captain Jas. Rundell and Messrs T. Gibb, R. Gibb, H/Prince and J. Roy. All day yesterday the trawler battled in heavy seas, being overtaken by darkness when off Gisborne. The captain decided to put into port rather than cQntinue to tussle with th© sea condiitpns, and attempted to follow the Pakura into the harbour entrance. Couiusion was caused, however, by doubt as to the position of the harbour lights and when the larger vessel inade a turn the trawler overshot the mark and became involved in brokeD water off the beacfi , A considerable surf was runmug, and though the engine was immediately reversed, the vessel was carried hard ashore. During the night a number of seas broke over the ship but no damage was reported. As sooh as the Marino's plight was indicated by blasts from th© sireu a ■young man, Mr N. J. Flavell, made his way to tfie vessel and advised tfiose on board of their position and took a line ashore as a means of eseape should th© situation become serious, The vessel still appears to be in no •Janger, but attempts at refloatipg necessarily await moderation of the heavy sea.
