RANKING LISTS

[ Volleyer.")

Hawke's Bay Players Graaed BASED ON POINTS SYSTEM

(By

In compiling the foliowing ranking lists for Hawke's Bay, the writer was assisted by two prominent players. Considering the men from three difierent angles, we allowed a maximum of ten points for siagles play, ten for doubles, and ten for consistency and temperament, Tn selecting a tennis team, all these points have to be considered; the small margin of diiferenee in the individual totals below gives some idea of the di±ficulties of the HawKe'e Bay selectors. P. Watson, probably the best singles player in the district, gets ten points for singles. Lowry, still the best doubles * player, scores a "possible" in that division, while Elliot deserves full marke for consistency and temperament. In explanation for the use of fche latter term, we should add that a man who can play a good losing game, at the same time help a partner to do his or her best, possesses a good tennis temperament, As the women players in Hawke's Bay are far more eonsistent than the men, they have been ranked on play alone. The foliowing are the lists evolved from the deliberations : —

Moorhead (Waipukurau) and Madden (Dannevirke) do not often meet the other leading Hawke's Bay players. and for that reason they have been omitfed. Moorhead has this season beaten Elliot and Sharpe.

Mrs. Lambe and Miss Moorhead have been omitted for the same reason as !Hadden and Moorhead. Representative Match. *■■■ The Wanganui team to meet Hawke's Bay at Wanganui to-morrow is as follows; — Men.— Cox, tTdy, Cavaye, Foster, Gordon, Rountree. Women.-r-M|sses Mary Purcell, Greaves, Margaret Purcell, Mrs. Evans, Miss Cox, Mrs. Pempsey. This team, a stronger eombination than that whieh visited Napier last summer, will probably defeat our representalives. However, the Bay se-

lectors, with an eye to the future, have . picked several younger players to whom a defeat may be a valuable lesson in tactics, When the Wanganui team was published their doubles pairs were included in the list. As the Hawke's Bay doubles combinations -will not be decided nntil the day of the match, some of our players will again be handicapped by lack of practice together. It is to be hoped that our selectors will in future follow the example set by Wanganui.
