TARADALE BATHS
Ready by November Next QUESTION OF FINANCE The proposal for publie swimming batns for Taradale is beipg steadily prosecuted, and it is now lioped that the baths will bo completed and ready for use by November 1 next. Last night the Taradale Town Board was advised by the Baths Conmiittee that it had approved of the site piau. The architects had been requested to complete the plans. A detailed estimate would be compiled for the purpose of obtaining the Loans Board 's approval to the raising of £750 in accordance with a xesolution which the board had already pasaed. It was desired that assistance be sought from the Government by a grani out of Employment Promotion Funds or Coronation Grant. In view of inereased costs it is anticipated that the estimated cost would be inereased by approximatoly 20 per cent. It was suggested that if £750 were raised by way of loan and a further £750 was provided by way of subsidy, it was probable that the remainder could be obtained by local eft'ort. If a delinite prolnise couid be obtained from the Government in respect to the amoant of assistance that would be available this would have considerablc bearing on the success of a loan vole. Mr. J. A. Wilkinson pointed out that, apart from its great value to the publie health, the swimming baths would be valuable for fire preventive purposes. He stated that out of the 300 children attending the Tarndale School only 70 could swim, and of these only 10 could swim a distance over 25 yards. It was decided that Mr. Webb should bring the proposal bofore the notice of the Minister of Publie Works at Wellington.
