PUBLIC OPINION

GBATEFUL

MAORI.

Flax-Growing on Poukawa Lake (To the Editor). Sir, — I wish to eongratulate the honourable member for Hastings, Mr. E. L. Cullen, for introducing a scheme of flax-growing for the natives in Hawke's Bay. This important industry is now being fostered by the Government, and„ it would solve the problem of finding a productiye measure in absorbing tho uCemployed Maoris of this district. Poukawa is an ideal area for flax production owing to tlie water supply, and with proper supervision by an expert flax iniller, tliis industry will be an asset to Hastings. I trust that wheii the Acting-Native Minister (Ilon, P. Langstone) entertains this proposition, the business people of the town will interest themselves, as it is to their benefit. — Yours, et©.,

Hastings, March 9,
