Engineer's Report WAIPUKURAU, Last night. At the meeting of the Patangata County Council held in Waipukurau, the engineer, Mr. J. (J. McLauehlan, presented the foljowing report:--Porangahau Riding. The maintenance metalling of the main highway has been eompleted, a total of 700 cubic yards being put out for the month, The power grader (Diesel) cut the water-tables from the Wangaehu road junetion to Longley's hill during Eebruary. The overhanl of the culverts on this length is now in hand. The Wangaehu clay road was trimmed up by the grader and a good job made. The water-tables were pulled with the off-hitch grader. The Cook's Tooth and Wangaehu roads were inspeoted and these roads are both in good order, though the water-tables reqiuire attention. The metalling of Siteman 's road will be eompleted to-day, and this has proved a 'loqger job than expected, the metal being very hard to quarry and break. The drain along E. White's frontage on Beach Toad has been cleared with the off-hitch grader and a good job done, and McAuley 's drain has also been cleared out, the spoil being put across thq road. Mr- d- Jones accepted the work as earetaker of the Porangahau Cemetery. The Booth. grader raked in the bulk of the Mangaorapa roads during the past month, and wiU tomplete this work during the ooming week. The work at Kate 's quarry Is eompleted, a total of 1096 cubie yards of metal being crush8d last month. The chairman and engineer of the Wairoa County, with two eouneillors, made an inspeetion pf the work carried out in this riding by the Anto Patrol grader and ofE-hitch machine, and were very interested in the work done on White's Toad drain, MoAnley's drain, Tahu road and the Einger-post road. Eparaima Riding. No metalling has been done on the main highway for the m°nth, but it has been raked in by the Diesel and Booth graders and is in fair order on the Wanstead section. The contractor has made a start with the widening work on the Wanstead hill, and is makino fair progress. ... The metalling of Hunter s Aecess road is now about eompleted, tbe output for last month being 498 cubic yards, and tbe contractor expected to finlsh last week. A start was made with Stoddart s Toad metalling, but stopped after J. cubic yards were put out to enable Hunter 's road to be eompleted. Maintenance metal was put out on Wilder road, 32 yards being put out from Kate's quariy. The metalling of the Bush road also eompleted, a total of 284 cubie yar.ds being put out for the month. Patangata Riding. The Diesel grader is now in this area and will rake in the main highways and district roads during this week. The Tamumu-Otane road has been trimmed up, and a miuch-needed improvement made as these roads had got in poor condition. The breakwater road requires a eoat of red metal to put it in order for sealing. Otane Water Supply. There has been rather misleading statements mad© regarding the Otane water supply by a correspondent regarding the quantity supplied and, for the information of those interested, the quantity pumpqd jg between 9000 an(i 10,000 gallons per day, the pumping being in three periods/ two hours in the forenoon, three hours in the afternoon, and three hours at night, and this is all the wells will stand, the pump has an output of 1200 gallons per hour. There is no doubt that a better supply of water is required to giv© satisfaction to the residents. Oero Riding; The contractor is making good progress with the work of clearmg !wlllows from the Makara stream, well over two milea being complet©d. The road gang have been the whole month on the poisoning of the willows in this stream. on the section cleared two years ago, This work was eompleted on the 1st instant, and about 9Qlbs. of arsenic has been used. ' The culverts have been1 cleaned up on the St, Lawrence road, but the overhaul has been held up for the Mangakuri road, the loading being done by the gang under Marsh. The contractor has made a start quarrying rock at the Waipuna quarry. No further word has been received from the natives regarding taking a supply of water from the proposed spring. Tamumu and Pourerere These highways were raked in by the Wehr grader early in the montli and are in fair order, The work of laying of Tam'umai'station road was eontinued, and an inspeetion of tho proposed new road waa made. Tho proposed road follows an easy route, except i'or two septions, and an alteration would be necessary to get a workable line, but there are no diffieulties in the way of the formation when required. O 'Leary aud gang have been sent out to renew an old wooden culvert on Long Range road near Sebley 's holding in reinforced concrete, this being a very necessary job, Repairs have been efl'eeted to the running deeking on the Tamuxnn and Bullivan's bridge, and the debris is being removed off the piles of the Tamumu bridge. This consists to a large extent in willow groynes from further up whieh have washed out and lodged . at bridge piers and are difficult to reI move. 1 In the Mangatarata riding the Wehr

grader raked in the road into H. Peacoek's homestead at Mangatarata last week, and will proceed to the "FariuWaiwhero xoads at once. i
