Masefield in Lead For King's Prize HARALDSEN NINTH

(By Telegraph-

TEENTHAM, Last Night. With an aggregate of 473 out of the possible 500, W. N. Masefield (Blenheim), who won the Eifie Ghampion's Belt in 1914, 1929 and again last year, is leading by one point for the King's Prize, the final of which will be fired over the 900 yards range at Trentham to-morrow afternoon. Second place in the King's Fifty is occupied by €. J.: Nix (Featherston), last night 's leader •for the King's with 472. Seven points away are D. J. Guiney' ; (Petone) and H. A. Cromie (Ashburton), each with 465, and close behind them are H. V. Croxton (Karori), who was King's Prizeman in 1920 and 1933 and F. J. Soler (Wanganui) each with 463. With the firing of to-day's long-rango matches seven of the matches in tiiei championship belt series were complet-J ed. Marksmen with the 50 highest! scores in these matches quaiify for in-i clusion in the King's Fifty to fire ten; rounds at 900 yards in the final for the championship. Eapid wind changes upset the calculations of many marksmen throughout; the day» There was a strong, gusty wind, the velocity and direction of which altered very quickly. The weather was the worst so far experienced at this meeting and several riflemen who had been in leading positions for the King's Prize at the end of the short ranges dropped back with low scores. The effect of the smaller bull's eye at 800 and 900 yards was the subject of much discussion on the ranges to-day. To conform to the standard adoptefi at Bisley last year the diameter of the bull's eye has been reduced from 36 inches to 30 inches for the present meeting. Although it differed as to the influence of the change on the scoring the view was fairly general that the reduction was responsible in the majority of cases for the drop of two points a range. The Auckland match of ten rounds at 800 yards and 900 yards, which was fired during the morning, was won by Croxton with 95. He had 49 at 800 yards and dropped four points at the second range. Masefield, who had a possible at 800 yards, filled second place also with 95. ' With his consistent shooting over all distances Masefield won the Australiau aggregate which is awarded for the highest aggregate scores in the Otago match, Wellington mateh and Auckland match. These matches involve one shoot at each of the short and long j ranges over which competitors fire in j the championship series. Masefield had a score of 242 out of the possible 250. Croxton finished second with 239 and F. Bowes (Auckland City) tliird with 237' The King's Fifty. The followiog marksmen wlll fire in a final match for the King'a Prize: — W. N.
