QUEEN CARNIVAL CAMPAIGN
. Effort to Raise Funds For . Trades Hall THE FIRST FUNCTION The Queen Carnival campaign to ra^se funds for the erection of a trades hall in Hastings officially commenced on Saturday rvhen the scheme was given a wonderful start with a massed aSsemblago of the organisations at Nelson Park. Fully 1500 people were present and n splendid nigbt's entertainmsnt was provided. Tbe procession. from Nelson street to Nelson Park, via Heretaunga street and Karamu road, attracted oonsiderable attention and afoused intens© enthusiasm, both sides of tbe route being packed 11 with people. Four candidates have been nominaced for thc carnival and with their respective organising committees they arranged for special displays in the pcct.c&ion and later short prqgrammes of eu tertainment. Points were awarded cc the merit of the displays and the enteiiainment, and the results were as fjuO'ft — Maori Queen (Miss Mohi) 1 General Labourers' Queen (Miss Eileen Kale) 2 Lal-.uir Queen (Miss Joyce Kale) ... 3 Whakatu Freezing Workers' Quegn (Miss Molly Jaffary) 4 Five pe? oent. of the takings at ths park goes to the winning queen's funds, 4 psr cent. to the second and 3 per cent. to the thira. The four candidates were introduced to the big crowd by Mr E. L, Oullen, M.P-, wbo officially declared the cam pai5u open. Assoeiated. with him was Mr 11. J. Reardon, of Wellington, who c-ong-atulated . all concerned on Jheir enterprise. It has been de.cided to announce the positions of the queens once a week in the early stages of the campaign, and. th« first announeement will be made next Saturday' In the meantime the various organising committees will be busy arranging various types of functions and events; both out-door and indoor, and tentative programmes reveal a wonderful variety of v attractions to come. ■
