Many Children Dying For Want of Milk MANY DESERTERS (Received 9. 11.15 a.m.) SALAMANOA, March 8. Deserters are coming from the Government side in increasing numbera from all parts of the Madrid front. All tell a story of food-sbortage. The railitia are often 48 hours without food exoept for rice, black bread and an occasional sardine. They received until recently a daily ration of horse-flesh and thin vegetable soup, but this fare is now a rarity. Oivilians' greatest deprivation ia milk, for want of which many children are dying. The nationalists have accumulated 20,000 tons of food behind the lines, ready to relieve the suffering population when the city is entered.
