LATE COLONEL CAMPBELL
H.B. County's Tribute "I regard Colonel Campbell as being the finest civil servant that New Zealand ever possessed" said Mr F, B. Logan, ehairman, at tp-day's meeting of the Hawke's Bay County Council when paying a tribute to the late Colonel G. F. C. Campbell, Controller and Auditor-General. "Colonel Campbell, ' ' said Mr Logan, "was in the serviee for about 63 years. Ten or twelve years ago, when it was time for his retirement, Colonel Campbell naturally thought that his resignafcion would be accepted and that he would be able to spend the remainder of his years in retirement. Howevlu*, the Government of the day thought that his services were far too valuable, with the result that he remained in harness to the end. In the course of his duties he frequentfy travelled through the Dominion, and I can say that he was a eourteous gentleman in every sense of Ihe word. , He had no fear and he had not the slightest compunction in wrapping over the knuckles any local body which transgressed in any way. ■ It is due to Colonel Camubell that local bodies are to-day on such a good footing. "Colonel Campbell was in his younger 'days a prominent athlele and repreented New Zealand on the Rugby field. He also took a prominent part in the volunteer system of the day." The council decided to forward • a letter to his relatives expressing synipathy in their bereavement, and expressing appreciation of the valuable services he had" rendered to New Zealand.
