Deficit Does Half a Mile Smoothly SILVER RING ARR1VES
fBy TeIasraDb
WELLIN GTUiN , TJiis uay. With so much racing over the weekend visitors have not yet begun to put in an appearance at Trentham and the only arrival so far has been Silver Ring. It was thought that there might be some fast work on the tracks this morning) but there was torrential overnight rain and it did not cease till near dawn. No galloping track was open. Though the weather is again elear it is by no means settled and the going on Thursday will, at best, be easy. Permission was secured to gallop Deficit half a mile, as he knocked -himself last Thursday and his trainer was anxious to test him. He slipped over the distance smoothly in 51 2-5 — good time on a greasy track — and pulled up well. Both he and Debham returned from their trip north looking better than when they left. Silver Ring carries a bright bloomj but he is in need of fast work. Hie trainer, J. Stewart, says he has not had a real gallop for 15 weeks and whether he runs in the Thompson Handicap depends on a trial he is to have tomorrow morning. His recent trouble has been in the shoulder, but there is no sign of it at present. He will have to carry the full penalty in the Challenge Stakes on the seeond day, making his weight 10.1. Siegmund has been turned out for a spell, so will not be contesting the St. Leger, from which Flying Chief also is removed. There are no further defections for the first day.
