BLYGAIN SURPRISES Sansfoy Wins St. Fatrick's Handicap GREENMEADOWS TOSOHO The Napier Park Racing Club's autumn meeting was concluded on I Saturday in glorious weather. The attendance was very large, being much larger than for some years. The perfect summer weather enabled the fair sex to don their finest raiment. The racing was excellent, good finishes being the order of the day. The course wats in perfect order, refiecting great credit upon the care taker, Mr McCutcheon. Mr W. P. Russell, in the judge's box, gave the utmost satisfactibn, as did the starter, Mr A. Vincent. The Napier Citizens' Band was in attendance and played a well-selecte3 programme. The handicapper, Mr H. Coyle, gave backers *some puzzles, and first favourites scored in only two out of the seven races. Curie was the outsider of the field in the Omahu High Weight, but class triumphed, and he won nicely. Blygain sprang a mild surprise by winning the Telegraph Hack Handicap and paying the best dividend of the meeting. ' King 'a Lancer, Gay Hunter, and Soho fought their Cup battle over again in the Greenmeadows Handicap and Soho got up in time to win from the favourite, Gay Hunter, with King's Lancer third. Son and Heir and Screen Star had another rattling contest in the Kuao Handicap, with Money Raid adding interest to tho struggle. In the end Coveney got Screen Star first past the post by a neck from Money Raid, with Son and Heir only a head away in third place.
The well-backed Sansfoy downed the favourite Passion Flower .in the St. Patrick's Handicap, with the favourite Lucullus Lad doing hiis duty in the recovery tstajkes by landing the final event, the Wharerangi Hack Handicap. The totalisator put through £8868 10/- for the day, an increase of £3593 over last year's figures, tho total for the two days being £14,494 10/-, an increase of £516G 10/- for the meeting. The catering, which was in the hands of Mr J. Scarrott, of Bay View, was well up to the high standard set by this caterer. There were two inquiries during the day, the first being an inquiry into the mishap to Hunting Step in 'the Esk Hack Handicap on Thursday. Paseing the kalf-miie post Tareha got up into second place, just beiiind tbe lavourite with Lord Hereford well placed. Roundmg the home bend Taieha keaded oS the favourite from Lord Hereford and Lady Wessex, Curie being last. After straightening up Lord Hereford catne again to lead, but half way up the etraight Curie, making a run, carao through, overhauling the leader and going on to win easily by two lengths from Lord Hereford. A good race took place until halfway down- the straiglit, when Blygain drew out, an4 won l»v two lengtlis from Hunters ' Morn, with Tyeoon a neck away third, and Gironde fourth.' As the barrier was let go thi'ee or four rivers got caugkt in the tapes. but fortuuately got clear. After they liad settled down Maahanui was showing tho way to Black Fox, King s Lancer, Hamarin and Gay Hunter. Down the back stretch Maahanui and Black Fox were still the leadei's from Hamarin with King's Lancer and Gay Hunter both well placed. Passing the lialf mile post all the leaders were well bunehed, and running on to the home bend Maahanui was sighted first as they turned into the straiglit from Black Fox, King's Lancer and Hamarin. Racingi to the post the field was practieally in a line from which King s Lancer struck the front. Afterwards Gay Hunter took charge. Soho, who was last into the straight, began to make his run to gather in the leaders about 100 yards off the post, going on to win comfortably by a length and a-half from the favourite, King's Lancer being a length further back for third. ling race in which Screen Star prevaiied against Money Raid after a neck-and-neck run by a head with Son and Heir a head away for third. Tullamore was fourth. Time, 1.2. ST. PATRICK'S HANDICAP. Lavina got away best from the barrier rise to lead from Wasteland, Passion Flower, Pennycomequick nndSansfoy. At the end of the first furlong Wasteland went to the front from Lavina "with Passion Flower and Pennycomequick running togethev Passing tho half-mile there was no change in the order, and Wasteland continued in front into the straight from Lavina, with Passion Flowetwo lengths back from Sansfoy. After they had settled down in the run to the post Sansoy quickly began to make ground. and after gatheringj in the leaders went on to finish, winning easily by two and a-half lengths from the favourite, who outstayed Wasteland by three-quarters of a length. Helios showed the way for four furlongs with Lucullus Lad. Tractile and Blygain' in that order. Nearing the straight Blygtain and Lucull'us Lad drew up to Helios. Once in the straight Helios retired. Lucullus Lad and Blygain fought out a good finish, with Tractile holding on welL Lucullus Lad drew out in the last hundred yards and won by two lengths, Blygain gaining second place by a neck from Tractile, Parry being placed fourth.
