GUARANTEE FOR JOE LOUIS
Joe Louis' managers are demanding a £20,000 guarantee, free of tax, for his appearance in London during the Coronation, says an overseas newspaper. And it is no wonder. He is reported to be the highest-paid man in the world of sport. Since turning professionai in 1934 he. has gathered in about £142,385. Last year he earned about £56,300. His total rounds of boxing were only 25, excluding exhibitions. His earnings worked out at about £752 a minute, disregarding time spent. in training. Knock-outs ended all Louis' fights in 1936, including the one in which Schmeling figured. That was his best purse, and was worth £28,220. On a time basis, his best purse was received in his contest with Eddie Sims. On that occasion he received £4500 and knocked out Sims in 26sec. That indeed was fast income — at the rat~ of £230 a second.
