FIRST-DAY EVENTS

An increase of £1573 10/- was shown in tlie totalisator turnover at the Napier Park Racing Cduh's opening day at Greenmeadows yesterday. Tlie weather cleared early in the afternoon, and for the re>mainder of the day conditions wero sunny and pleasant. The principal event, the Napier Cup, was won by Mr W. H. gaisford 's King's Lancer. The presentation of the cup followed in the bird-cage when the president, Mr C. Louisson, congratulated Mr Gaisford on his iine win. In the running of the final event, Hunting Step lost her rider, G. L. Goulsboro, when entering the straight, but he escaped wiwi a bruisfng. Excellent Tacing was provided thronghout the day, in which somo good finishes were staged. Mr W. P. Russell, the judge, gave every satisfaction with his deeisions, and the handicapping done by Mr H. Coyle brought the fields well together. The starting by Mr A. Yincent was of a high order, giving the fields good breaks. The single pool machine was in operation on the totalisator, whicH handled £5626 for the day, as against £4052, for the same day last year. A broadcast of the running was given by Mr G. McCormick, the well-known sportsman, Of Hastings. The complete results are as under:OMARUNUI HIGHWEIGHT. Of £100; 11 mile. 3 Mr. R. J. Douglas ' Lady Quex, 9.3 (Weaver) 3 Also rau: 4 Lord Hereford 9.7, 5 Count Willonyx 9.. Royal Routine was the bes$ away, being well clear as the field passed the post. Lord Hereford and Count Willonyx were together going out of the straight. The favourite quickly opened a gap of four lengths from Count Willonyx, Lord Hereford dropping back. Half a mile from the post Lady Wesses can into second position, and racing to the home turn Red Rufus took second plac^ two lengths behind the favourite. As they turned into the straigiht in the run to the post the favourite was unable to hold off the field closing on him. Red Rufus caught him almost on the post, winning in a strong finishing run by a short head. Lady Wessex, four lengths away was third and Lord Hereford fourth. Time, 2.9 3-6. Parry was best away, bnt at the end of a furlong Agog took charge from Trailer and Hamayin. Racing across the top Wananga ran up, taking the lead from Agog, Trailer and Parry. The favourite continued his good run, being two lengths clear as the field entered the straight from Trailer, Agog and Hamarin. Racing to the post Wananga ran wide out on the course, but finisbcd strongly, winning easfly by three lengths from Agog, who beat Trailer by a head., A bare margin only separated Trailer and Hamarin. Running to the far turn and entering the straight the order remained unchanged, Onco settled down in the raee to Ihe post, the field swung into line. At the riso of tho barrier Gay Hunter was slow away through being squeeze.d back. As they rau past the stand Luculius Lad ehowed the way to King's Lancer, Black Fox, Blue Garter, Soho, Maahanui and Gay Hunter. As they raced down the back stretch and across the top there was little change m the order, with Gay Hunter still tailing the field. A/rcing to the home bend King's Lancer rotluced the lead held by Luculius Lad to half a iength, \rith Black Fox and Maahanui botk well placed and Gay Hunter rnoving up. Once they had .settled down in the raue to tlie post King's Lancer overhauled Luculius Lad, who afterwards dropped back Soho at this stage also came up quickly from well back. King's Lancer went on to win comfortably by three lengths from Soho, who flnished strongly after not being sighted until well into the straight. Gay Hunter, who had a lot of ground to make up, was third a similar distance further back. . Blue Garter was fourth. Timo, 2.7 4-5. MAIDEN SCURRY Of £60; 5 furlongs. 3 Mr J. M. Asset was oest away from Nelumbo, Top Hat and King's Hope, but after two furlongs were covered Nelumbo had charge from Asset, Top Hat, King's Hope and Nereus. Racing to the home turn Nelumbo still showed the way with Top Hat now in second place from Asset and Nereus. Up the straight Nelumbo was never troubled, to win comfortably by three lengths from Nereus who gathered in Top Hat a furlong off the post. King's Hope finished fourth. Time. 1.1 4-5. After a short distance Pennycomequiek went up to Lavina, for tho pair to run practically on ev-en terms with Slr iNigel and Passion Flower together nearly two lengths back. Passing the four-xurlong post Lavina was showing siightly in front of Pennycomequiciz, and the pair ran in these positions"into the straight. In the run to the judge Lavina was not able to stay, and fciir Nigel, making a strong run, looked the winner. Over the last ilfty yarda Pennycomequiek, who still had a sligkt margin over the favourite, drew away in a fine effort to win rather easliy by a length. Murray) 3 Also started: 1 Jazz Boy 8.11, 5 Seyfried 8.1, 7 Reeitatton 8.0, 6 Mohua 8.0, 3 Hunting Step 7.7. Recitation was left when the field were sent away, and after they had settled down Jazz Boy led from Mohua, Quake and Tyeoon. At the half-mile post Quake had run up to taka the lead from Jazz Boy with Tyeoon, Mohua and Royal MinstreT ~all weli placed. As heads wero turned for home Jazz Boy and Quake were sighted together from Tyeoon, Mohua and Royal Minstrel. At this stage Hunting Step lost his rider. After they had sttraightened up Tyeoon came through, the leaders being followed by Royal Minstrel. In a hard finish to the post Tyeoon won by a length. Quake was tliird two lengths from Royal Minstrel. Jazz Boy was fourth. Time, 1.14 2-5.
