WOETH
WHILE,
(To the Editor) Sir. — The discovery of a valuable de* posit called bentonite in such a seem« ingly unlikely spot as Porangahau has set many people in Wairoa wondering when a systematic survey of this district will be made. Part of the East Coast has been given attention, mainly in connection with oil, but Wairoa has not figured very largely in any geophysical effort. Eumours of gold in the TJrewera Country may probably be dismissed as, fairy talcs, but mainyof Wairoa 's older settlers hold the belief that there is a deposit of iron in ' that territory. I have observed some years ago on the east side of the Wairoa river appreciable' deposits of ironsand. D'iscussing this point with a Wairoa setller with a war service, tho latter held that as the price of metals begin "to soar as a result of the European armament race, the Government will be compelled to explore the possxbilitie:i that lie under its direct jurisdiction, and in this respect this district is one area that should receive attention. — Yonrs. at.n.
