ROAD DEVELOPMENT

t Our Own Correspondent.

Wairoa — Rotorua Highway DISTRICT PROSPERING

From

WAIROA, Last Night. Good progress is being made with the improvements so much needed on the Wairoa — Waikaremoana — Rotorua highway, and at the present time there are about 100 men engaged between the Lake and Ruatahuna, and an equal number between the latter place and Te Whaiti. A good deal of formation work has been completed and the metalling will soon be in hand. The development work is also progressing, and 300 acres are at present being dealt with. Only three years have passed sinca .noxious weeds held sway, and now barley and sub-clover adorn the upland landscape. A timber mill is in operation, and there is a good market for the product. There is "a coming town" at Ruatahuna, once only a poor-looking pa. Now there are three stores, a school with 108 pupils, a post office and two accommodation houses, while a bus is used to take the pupils to school. Evidenee of the prosperity of the area and the depth of the purse may be found in the fact that nearly every Maori rides a cycle and that cars aud trucks to the value of £4000 have been bought during the last year.
