This portion of the hillside at Wanganui was carved out by Maoris for one of the first missionaries in the district, the Rev. Richard Taylor, and was used by him in the for ties as an altar when preaching to the Natives assemble on the hill-slope below him. The niche in the centre was used for the communion plate.
