SUCCESSFUL FETES
Hastings High School Functions PARENTS' LEAGUE WORK The great success that has attended the garden fetes held during reoent yeara at the Hastings Higfi School was etressed in the annual report of of tfie committee of tfie Hastings High School Parents' League presented at tfie annual meeting of tfie league by the presldent. Mr F- J. Hull, last evening. The committee met on six ocoasions, including the meetings held in connection with tfie garden fete, stated tfie report. The most important activity during the year was the garden fete, which was again a most suocessful function, a net profit of £123 14/11 being realised. It had been tentatively afranged to hold another garden fete on Marcfi 11 of this year, but owing to tfie late opening of the school on account of the infantile paralysis epidemic it will be necessary it postpone it until a later date. Assembly Hall Fund. — In oonjunction with the Board of Governors and the Old Pupils' Association, an appeal for donations towards tfie Assembly Hall Fund was made last June, the League sending circulars to the parents of all the present pupils. The response was rather disappointing, only £25 3/6 being realised ; $,nd it would seem from past experienc© that our beat way of raising money was by an annual "garden fete. From the four garden fetes that have been field since 1928, approximately £670 fias been realised. Grants. — During the year the committee had been able to repay the loan of £30 made by the Board of Governors, and fias in addition handed over to that body the sum of £90 to be expended in improvements to the Assembly Hall, which i& now a great asset to the school. altfiougfi much remains to be done if the fullest use is to be made of the building. A grant of £2 was made towards the purchase of football caps for the members of the School XV. Sports Day. — Unfortunately, this function had to be postponed on account of weather conditions, so tfiat instead of a profit being made by the League from the tea-rooms and aweet stall, a small loss was efiown- However, it is felt that apart altogether from the, financial result, the service given at these gatherings is appreciated by those who attend. Parents' Day. — ^Members of the Ladies' Committe© again provided afternoon tea on Parents' Day, and also assisted with the supper at the pupils' annual social. Finance. — The year commenced with £12 0/8 in hand, and £l 15/- was received by way of subscriptions, £1 11/6 donations, £25 3/6 donations towards Assembly Hall, £123 14/11 proceeds of garden fete; while payments made are as follows : — Loan repayment, £30, grants to Board of Governors for Assembly Hall £90. grant for football caps £2. expenses of sports day £2 17/5, expenses of parents' day £3 5/8, sundries £4 19/-, secretary's honoi'arium (1935) £10 10/-, do (1936) £11 15/-, leaving a balance in band of £8 18/6. Thanks.. -The thanks of the League are due to all those who worked so hard to make the garden fete such a success, especiaily the Old Pupils Association whose efforts with side-shows and concerts accounted for about 20 per cent. of the proceeds ; to the ladies who worked so willingly and etflciently at the other functions during the year; and to the Press for the generous publicity accorded to the League's activities. Owing to the poor attendance, those present deeided that while the annual report and balance sfieet should be adopted, it was advisabl© to adjourn the meeting until March 30 and then conduct the election of officers and proceed with the other business on the agenda paper, This course was adopted.
