ATHLETIC AND CYCLING CLUB DINNER HELD IN HASTINGS LAST EVENING

A most successful . dinner orgaiiised by the Hastings Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was given at the Hawke's Bay Farmers tearooms in honour of tbose who took part in the recent ladies' inter-house sports meeting. Over 150 guests wero seated at the dinner tables, which were decorated with vases of asters in sbades of pink, mauve and white, and bowls of dahlias in pink and flame shades arranged with maidenhair fern. After dinner the club chairman, Mr J. 0. Taylor, expressed pleasure at seeing sueh a fine attendance at this gestme of appreciation which the Hastings Amateur and Athletic Association had_ arranged for those taking part in the inter-house sports, the performers, instructors and firm managers. "The club intended to start the in-ter-house sports meeting in a small way but 1^ months ago at the first gathering a very high standard was set," said Mr Taylor. "However this year's meeting maintaiued the same high standard and it is lioped to be able to increase the troph'es, and have besidcs th© Alexander C'hal'euge Shield tropuies for separate events. Several speakers followcd, the first being Mr MacDonald, aotiug-niauager of the firm of Ilunt's whoso teaui won the challenge shield. Mr V. L. Wostorman spoke on behalf of his team, last year's shield winners who lost by a quarter of a point this year. He spoke of the exoellence oF the inter-house competitions both from a health point of view and from the team spirit which prevailed. Mr C. Henderson, of Woolworths, and Mr J. J. Garvey, of J. R. McKenzie's endorsed Mr Westerman's remarks, aud on behalf of the instructors, Mr O. Jouson and Mr W. C. Taylor expressed the pleasure gained by tiie sports. Mr 13. Graham suggested that in the future the teams carry on throughout the winter months. At the conclusion of the speeches all the guests went on to the State Theatre to the pictures. The club officials present were: The chairman, Mr J. C. Taylor; executhe committee, Messrs E. Wall. 0. Tong, F. Henderson, L. McCarthy, H. Connop, W. Lochhead, A. Mclvor, T. Johnstone, W. WalUs, E. J. Wall, J. H. Attwood, W. Hasler; ladies' chaperon, Mrs E. Ci'opp and the secretary. Mr G. N. Rees iMany of these acted as judges at the sports. Others present at .the dinner who were officials were Captain McBride and Messrs W. Fisher, J, ; ltichards, H. J. Wright and L. Wright. Several special guests were present, wives of officials and representativeg of the firms, besides a great many of the girls belonging to the teams, and their coaches.
