Surprise For Mayor oi Hastings DISTRIBUTION METHOD Surprise, pleasure and appreciatioa were expressed by the Mayor of Hastings, Mr G. A. Maddison, last evening an the announcement in the HeraldTiibune of the gift of £1150 by Lord iNuffield for distribution :in Hastings. "The announcement in the papera was the first intimation that I had of the generous gift," he said, "and naturally I have not been able to como to any decision as to what shall be done with the money. I will probably set up a small committee to adminis.ter the fund, and most certainly the distribution will he effected through. reeognised societies, not to individuals directly. ' ' Mr Maddison said that there would be a proper controlling organisation and the sum will be deposited in a trust account, with the Town Clerk, Mr Noel C. Harding, as treasurer. Lord Nuffield will be made conversant with the state of the fund through his representative, who will be given a properly certified and audite.d statement. "This ia the first time, as far as I personally am aware, in the history of Hastings that such a gift has been given to the town," continued Mr Maddison. "I cannot praise too highly Lord Nuffield 's philanthropy, and on behalf of the citizens of Hastings I will express to him our sincere gratitude for his wonderful generosity and for his genuine thought for those who are afflicted by physical and other disabilities. "Every effort will be made to distribute the gift in aceordance with the spirit in which the gift is given, and in the light of Lord Nuffield 's expressed desires," he said in 'conclusion.
