WELLINGTON, TMs Day, The annonnceinent that he would give £51,700 to New Zealand charities was made by Lord Nuffield after he landed in New Zealand from the Awatea. He is making' his fonrth visit to New Zealand and is on holiday, which he intends to spend in the South Island. New Zealand has now received henefactions totalling £110,000 from Lord Nuffield, who in the last ten years has, given away approximately £8,500,000.

"To give snoney to causes which *re praiseworthy is not itself a difficult matter," said Lord Nuffield, "espeeially in one's own land. In other countries, however, a great deal of thought is necessary in order to arrive *t an equitable basis of distribution. ' ' After consultation with Mr O. J. B. Norwood, he said, he proposed to diyide £50,000 among the 14 largest cities and boroughs in propprtion to their population, subuxbs ineluded, and the remaining £1700 between the districta of .Wairarapa and the west coast of the South Island, eaeh to receive £850, He will seek the co-operation of Jfayors with a request that they select Ihe causes the gift might begt help. "I should mahe it plain that the •mounts shown will be given to the Mayotfs concerned for distribution at their sole and absolute discretion," eaid Lord Nuffield, "but for- their guidance I would express the opinion that crippled children, hospital and materoity work and those who suffer Buch afflietions as blindness, deafness jand dumbness should be uppermost in their minds." f The list is as follows: — Auckland £13,650 Wellington £9,650 Christchurch £8,550 Dunedin £5,300 Wanganui £1,650 Invercargill £1,630 Palmerston North £1,550 Hamilton .......... £1,300 Timaru i.. .......... £1,200 Napier £1,200 Newr Plymouth £1,200 Hastings £1,150 Gisborne ........... £1,050 Nelson ........ £900 For the rest of the gift the Mayors iof Masterton and Greymouth will act, the boroughs ineluded heing Masterton, Featherston, Greytown, Pahiatua, Eketahuna, in the Wairarapa, and the places on the west coast to include Hokitika and Westport, Lord Nuffield is&ues a warning that he will not be in any one place more than a day and it is useless for people to write( to him as it is impossible for letters'to be answered.
