THRILLING BATTLE 3271bs. Mako Tries to Leap Into Cockpit FOUGHT FOR TWO H0URS

AUCKLAND, This Day. A thrilling experience in a remarkable week of deep-sea fishing befell Mr H. White Wickham, of London. When off the north-west corner Piercy Island he hooked a anako shark, which at once proved to be a ferocious fish. Shortly after taking t the bait the mako leapt 25 feet towards the launch Ozone, from whieh Mr White Wickham was fishing, straight toward the cockpit, which it migsed by eight feet. After turning back quickly, the fish leapt again for the cockpit, and again missed, it is estimated, by six feet. Alarmed at suek an attack, Mr White Wickham prepared to retreat from so preeariouig a position. The first run-out took 400 yards of Ene and the huge fish then scared the occupants of the launch Alma G near-by by nearly leaping into their cockpit. Returning to the Ozone the shark hit the coaming of the launch, whose occupants prepared for the worst. Mr White Wickham stafed afterwards that he. himself. contemplated jumping overboard as the shark iseemed likely to gain its objective and land in the cockpit. After two hours of thrilling fighting in rough water, the mako was conquered and, on the Ozone 's return to Deep Water Cove, the fish was found to weigh 327 lbs.
