NOT A VETERAN YET

D. P. Lindsay is Swimming Well NEARLY A NEW REC0RD Further proof that D. P. Lindsay is far from being the veteran that some critics class him to be, was provided on Friday evening, wheh he ' clocked Smins 13 2-5secs. for the 440 yards in a special attempt at the - Maddison Baths, Hastings, to set up a now -New Zealand record for . the distance. He failed to reach G Bridsen'? record, set up at Auckland in 1932 by a fifth of a second. * ... Lindsay, who at one time was the holder of all the New Zealand swimming championship titles from- the 220 yards to the mile, has revealed himself this season a's being still quite capable of holding his own with the best of the so-ealled younger generation. He has recorded this seaSon 2.25" 1-5 for the 220 yards, 5.-15 1-5 for the 440 yards, and 23.6 2-5 for the mile — times that compare very favourably indeed with the records for these distances, and particularly so with the official times recorded' in other districts this season. This year .official times recorded by the leading swimmers throughout the Dominion are of special interest for the reason that as there are ,to be no national championships the New Zealand Swimming ' Council proposes to establish a ranking list based on the times recorded by competitors during the season. ' ' CJnder these, circumsfcances Lindsay appears to be one swimmer who. should tigure very prominently in the list to compiled. It is rather unfortunate that the championships were abandoned altogether for this year, instead of being postponed, for he would un doubtedly have set the younger swim mers a diflficult task in gaiuing uational titles. He is actually swim ming better and f aster than , ever be fc"9, and is far from "burnt out."
