; ' INVERCARGILL, Last Night. The xnost serious damage to country roads and bridges for twenty years has been done by heavy fioods in the Southland county this week. Although the flood waters everywhere were receding to-day the flood atea Was notsufficiently cleared for an estimate to be made* of the cost of repairing the damage, It is known that the cost will be heavy and it is possible that application for a Government grant will be made by .theSouthland County Council -which is suddenly faced with an expenditure of thousands of pounds on repairing many roads and bridges that a f ew days ago were in good order. ... The seriousness of the damage by| floods this week comes from the cnmu-! lative effect of minor damage alinost; everywhere rather than from any par-| ticularly heavy damage in one district.' It takes weeks' of work to bring the roads back to the state they were in be-'; fore the flood. ' i Tho flood waters at Wyndham rapidly ! Teceded to-dayvand no losses of stockj have been Teported in the district, but, many farmers are heavy losers because j of the effect of the flood on their crops. j In addition they are faced with the loss j .
of winter feeff, cut ana stacked hay | having been wasKed.away from many properties. Even without this week's floods which came as an unwelcome' climax the season has been ' an excep- ! tionally bad pne for haymaking and harvesting, consistent rain having held up all farm work for weeks.
