AERODROME FOR WAIROA

Our Own Corresuonrtent \

Councillors Think Cost Not Warranted

(Froia

WAIROA, Last Niglit. At the.Borough Council" meeting the Mayor, Mr H. L. Harker, reopened the question of the provision of an aerodrome but only met with faint-heartcd suppori. Mr Harker said, in Teference to the expansi'on of air services all over New Zealand,- that unless Wairoa did soxnething very soon she would be left in the lurch. The Public Works Department would prepare the aerodrome, but would not provide the land, which was the duty . of the . County Council . and Borough ^Council combined. in a joint loan for £3000, the' borough . share of interest and sinking fund being estimated at £75 per annum. Mr . Galbraith thought they were . going too fast, and ; said he would like to know.why. the borough had not been asked to contribute to the railway atwell as , the air services. The railway would .be a fact soon, and Wairoa had not been asked to assist in getting the station built. The Mayor asked if the last speaker had not got any income-tax papers. Mr Galbraith: When the motor-car services were started we were notasked to help in building the garages. The Mayor; No, certainly not, but 1 they had to pay for the roads,

Mr Clark was not sure if , in ihe event of an aerodrome being established, that the company woufd call here. The Mayor replied that it had been stated by the company that the planos would call at Wairoa. Mr Berry said that an official "told him the company woiild not call, owing probably. to loss of time in landing and taking off, but that if the business was- to be had they would station a plane at Wairoa. He (Mr Berry) said he would like to see the seheme gona on with if he could see some return for the money, but at present he could not. Mr - Galbraith said he f avoured a * ' taihoa' ' ' policy, and moved that thei question be held over for six months, in • the meantime the special. committee to make further investigations. The motion was lost by four to three, Mr Berry remarking that it was only of the increase in rates that he was afraid of . Finally it was agreed to submit to the County . Council an offer of half cost for- its opinion.
