BEAUTIFYING WAIROA

Our Own Corresnondenti.

Council to Spend £ 1 00

(From

•WAIEOA, Last Night. ' As was expected hy all lovers of the beautiful in.town, the Mayor, at the council meeting, launched a preliminary schefhe for boautifying the borough by planting several avenues of trees. Mr. Harker said .that the council should now take some very definite steps to boautify the towu by' doing some very necessary tree-planting, which would not be costly but would prove a valuable asset. A special committee should be set up to go into the matter, instancing Lahore street ano Clyde road, both 1§ chains wide, as suitable for a first start. He thought that £200, or even £250, should be spent in beautifying, and moved: "That a committee representing the finance, works and reserves committees, be set up witK power to spend up to £250." Mr. L. E. Galbraith said that whilo he agreed with the Mayor on the value of beautifying the town, £250 was too much to spend and it was at the horough boundaries that a start should be made, The Mayor said he had not lost sight of that point, but would like it postponed till they were able to use thc tree guards at the beaeh avenue, andi they could get a good part of the cost out of side-show fees. He did not mean that £250 should be spent now, but that the committee might he able to plan up to that extent. Mr. W. H. Brady said that £50 was quite enough to spend. Mr. Gemmell said he was as keen as anyone on tree-planting, but thought £100 would be enough the first year. Mr. W. J. Clark approved of the Mayor 's suggestion, though he was not so sure it would make members pojralar with the ratepayers, but he favoured £100 instead of £250. The Mayor 's motion, as amended to £100, was then carried.
