FAST HURDLING

Miss R. Tong Does 90 Yards In 13 l-5Secs.

NAPIER ATHLETICS A particularly fast time of 13 1-5 seconds was registered in an exhibition over the hurdles by Miss Rona Tong, the New Zealand champion woman hurdler, at the weekly meeting of the Napier Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club at McLean Park last evening, ■when there was another good attendance to witness a firet-class programme. Miss Tong hold| the New Zealand women '3 reeord of 12 l-5secs. for the 80 yards hurdles, and so lt may be taken that her time of 13 l-5seCs. over the new New Zealand championship distance of 90 yards compares favourably and is pleasing in view of the proximity of the New Zealand championship meeting at Auckland ou March 12 and 13. Another innbvation introcluced. at the meeting was the cyclists teams9 pursuit race in which two toams over 12 laps endeavoured to Teduce or increase their starting distancea. One team started on scratch and the other on the 220-yard mark, the crowd being well entertaine.d in watching the backmarkers' efforts to reduce their opponents > lead. Several excellent performancee wero registered during the evening and although the provincial championships were only two days distant, every athlate gave of his best and provided the spectators with many thrilling finishes. This is a good tribute to the club spirit of the members who always strive to give the public a good evening '5 ente*> tainment.
