STIMULANTS FOR CABBAGE
It Is not generally realised tliat in most gardens autumn or winter manuring is not snfficieat to carry the crops to perfection. Summer stimnlants also are necessary or at least are highly benefieial. The nature "of these «timulants shonld vary in accordance with the epecial requirements of the crop. , The various members of the cabbago family need supplies of nitrogen. All soils contaijj. a proportion of nitrogen, but few of them suffieient to satisfy the greed of a cabbage. Sulphate of ammonia and nitrate of soda are the two chief nitrogen providers, Thq former is considerably cheaper than the latter and will therefore commend itself -to most. It is slower in aetion and nepds more mokture to dissolvo it, but that is no disadvantage if it is spring kled on the groqnd rather earljer than the nitrate. would be, and in showery weather, or alternately, if the land is heavily watered immediately after an application. Not more than }oZ. per square yard shoujd be used and it miift uot fouch the leaves pr stems or it will burn them. Once a month is often enough to apply the dressing. Any sne* cial cabhage piante that are wanted fpr show might have something more thgn nitrogen. What is nsnally done is to water them twice at an interval of a fortnight, with the following: loz. s#' phate of iron "to 2s z. of sulphate of &m* monia in a gallon of water
